Craft Beer Review and Beer of the Week: Temperance from Sunny Republic

Welcome to the Shed. I am even-star and this is The Beer in Review. Today's craft beer review and BEER. OF THE. WEEK is Temperance from Sunny Republic Brewing Company.

Share It!

Now this is going to be a bit of a journey so bear with me. Temperance is probably one of the strangest beers I have ever had. In so many ways. And it is beer of the week this week for two reasons: nostalgia and innovation.

So many flavours in this beer took me back to my childhood in Canada and it took some rather controversial risks with a familiar and popular beer style.

Why is it a strange beer? Well for one thing, and I have said before not to believe everything thing you read on a pump clip, the pump clip says it is a Dark Mild.

When the landlord poured my pint I looked at the light amber cloudy liquid, took a sip, and raised an eyebrow and the landlord said: Yeah I know! not a mild is it?!

No. It is more of what I would call an old fashioned IPA: Amber and lightly citrus. And I really liked it! It was dry and tanic and lemony. But more than that...

I am going to struggle here with any of my British readers because they didn't grow up in Canada with the same things I did. It tasted of iced tea and tang and lemon Kool Aid. And there was even a teeny tiny bit of Hawaiian Fruit Punch (if there are any Canadians reading this that remember THAT stuff!).

It was bitter, citrus, and mouth pukeringly astringent to the point where there was almost that powdery flavour. In Canada, iced tea and tang and Kool Aid are all made from powders you add water to and it took me right back to summer afternoons in the yard playing tag or helping mom in the garden.

I know this sounds totally weird but this beer just took me right back there in a way that no beer has taken me any where. Even their branding is nostalgic with that feel of '50s  vacation destination posters.

The Sunny Republic Brewing Company is fairly brand spanking new. Founded in 2012 away down in Dorset. This is the first time I have seen them and I found Temperance an innovative beer that took  risks with style and flavour. Awesome!

The Beer in Review is a blog about beer. Mostly British beer because that is where I live. I post a review every week day. Make sure you check in on Friday which is when I reveal BEER. OF THE. WEEK!
