Craft Beer Review: Black Diamond from Cottage Brewing

Welcome to the Shed. I am even-star and this is a take-your-medicine-edition of The Beer in Review. Today's craft beer review is for Black Diamond from Cottage Brewing.

Black Diamond is what I would definitely call a Mild in the traditional mild style. Perhaps a bit high on the ABV but otherwise all of the characteristics are there: very dark brown yet not heavy, middle sweet, big on malt, low on hops. Big flavours of coffee liqueur.  It's got some smokey winter fruits stuff going on and some very subtle spice. Nutmeg would be the closest thing to describe it.

I am not a Mild fan. I prefer lighter amber, gold, and brown Bitters. However, this blog is about trying to expand my horizons. If the pursuit of beer can be referred to in such an ambitious way. Remember how I used to think I didn't like stout? Maybe there is a mild out there that will tempt me over to the Dark Side.

Also I have to keep the numbers up. 250 NEW beers this year. Which can be a bit tricky when you don't have a head for booze (like 2 pints at 4.3 and it's a slippery slope for the Lady Geek here) and like doing other things on the weekend besides drinking.

The landlord at our favourite local has favourites that tend to appear at regular intervals on the guest pumps. Although our Friday night local has improved since we decided to change. The first couple of times we went down there the selection was disappointing but the last couple of times there has been more interesting stuff on. Not all awesome but also not 6X.

I tried a lot of Cottage beers last year (I am still catching up on reviews) but never saw this one that I can remember. One of their "Rail Ales" (see what they did there?) was on earlier this year which was more my style. You can see the review: Broadguage. Also a slightly brief review (from when I wasn't really writing about beer) for one of there other regular Rail Ales: Duchess.

Unfortunately I've had computer problems this morning, otherwise I would have put a bit more in here about the Cottage Brewing Co. but they are guaranteed to be on again soon.

The Beer in Review is a blog about beer. Mostly British beer because that is where I live. I post a review every week day. Make sure you check in on Friday which is when I reveal BEER. OF THE. WEEK! You can contact me with comments and questions on twitter or facebook.
